Hanami Top – Pattern Testing for StraightGrain

Have you heard of An of StraightGrain? Because if you haven’t you definitely need to check her out! She’s had an amazing Kid’s Clothes Belgian Style series and now has the ongoing Secret Squirrel series with Suz of sewpony, plus let’s not forget all the amazing patterns she’s been cooking up, classic yet modern. And now she’s just released her newest pattern the Hanami Top and Dress and I was lucky enough to be picked out of tons of applicants to test this pattern out with tons of other awesome and inspiring bloggers/sewists. I seriously can’t believe I’m typing this up now! So, before I go nuts, let me show you what I came up with.

I opted to go with the top and use this purple chambray that I had on hand for a more casual look that would show off the structure of this pattern.

In keeping with the casual feel I chose the crossed back option and I must say that I.AM.IN.LOVE! Seriously this back speaks to me! It’s just so nice and breezy looking! There’s buttons on both sides to keep it together, and I was a bit nervous about taking it on, since this would be my first attempt to make button holes, but what was I afraid of?!? Testing buttons holes a bit on a swatch first I had no fears (ok, maybe still a bit of fear) left and buttoned it up! Watch out for more buttons in the future haha.  Now since I went with the crossed back I had to opt out of the slim peter pan collar option but let me tell you, I am planning on a dress for A with it next, something just a little less casual?!?

Let me just note quickly, did you notice that flouce?!? Woohoo for some ruffles πŸ™‚

And last but not least, I went with the Tulip flutter sleeve option to add some extra interest, not that it really needed it but hey, I couldn’t help myself, I had printed and cut both pattern pieces for both sleeve options, but once I got cutting into the fabric I thought this would be the best.

Now you can’t really tell from these pictures but once on and phototaking was over, A really showed how much she loved it (she was a bit of a grump about the photos, hence the juice box…), and is now quick proud of her new top. Now go over to StraightGrain and check out the rest of the pattern tour and her amazing shop!

I love the purple chambray. You can really see the beautiful lines of the top. And I love that she is drinking a juice box.
